Apparel Review - Now Ain't That A Stitch

Photobucket
So Kinkies...  I've told you all time and time again that I love accessories and natural hair t-shirts.  Whether rocking both with some jeans and heels or some flip flops (that's the kind of girl I am), there's nothing better than those two items!!  My favorite types are the ones that scream creativity and personality.  And that of course brings me to talk about my 'Kinky' t-shirt from Now Ain't That A Stitch!  It debuted a few months ago in my pictures for the NJ Hair Care Expo, where sooooo many people stopped me to tell me how much they loved my shirt.

What's Now Ain't That A Stitch's t-shirts made of?
Mine is made of 100% cotton.  I am not sure if all shirts sold are of the same or similar fabric/material.

Photobucket
What's your first impression of  Now Ain't That A Stitch's t-shirts Kinky? I love, love, love it!  It was a comfortable fitting shirt that I don't foresee shrinking.  I like how it fits; however, it may also look great if it was made on a fitted tee.  I love that you can customize the skin tone of the face, the type of hair, as well as the earrings.  I think these shirts are awesome for big, as well as little, natural beauties.  I would totally get one for my little princess if they came in sizes for little girls (hint, hint)!

As noted above, I had gotten a lot of compliments on the shirt, and I can totally see why.  A lot of the shirts geared towards us naturals have iron-on patterns, nothing really unique and creative about them at times.  Now don't get me wrong, there are SOME shirts out there that are creative, unique, and worth the money (I own a few of them); however, there are also a lot that aren't.  Besides painted natural hair shirts, I have never seen anything close to personalized creativity than the shirts from Now Ain't That A Stitch!  The owner doesn't just iron or stamp on the pattern, she sews the fabric on to each t-shirt, not only may this take time,  it also seems that she puts both effort and love into each and every shirt.  <--- my opinion/perspective.

I say go check her out and show her some love.  Tell her that I sent you and if you order a shirt, let me know your thoughts!!  :-)

Book Review - Coils & Curls: The Hair Product Handbook

Photobucket
Hey Kinkies!  Well, you guys already know that I am passionate about [natural] hair, as well as reading, so I was happy to have been given the opportunity to read and review "Coils & Curls: The Hair Product Handbook."  This book was written by Nicole Harmon, Cosmetic Chemist and Founder of Hair Liberty.

What's your first impression of "Coils & Curls" Kinky?  Although I learned a thing or two, I can't say that this book is totally for me.  Now don't get me wrong, there are a few great hair care tips, which I will later elaborate on, and it's give you tips on what to look for when purchasing a product; however, it seems that the focal products were those that contain ingredients that a lot of naturals opt OUT of using.  Given that it's supposed to be a handbook to assist in the buying process of your hair products, that was a bit disappointing.

The book starts off talking about  the make up of hair, deciphering product labels (which we all should be doing), breakage risk for each of the four hair types, and porosity level of the four hair types.  The book then walks you through choosing the right shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, and deep conditioner for your hair.  I think there's some great tips in the aforementioned sections.  She goes on with recommendations of hair care products, none of which are truly consist of 100% natural ingredients; and key ingredients, where only a small portion are actually natural.

Some of the great things about the first unit of the book are the "staple product formula," some butter/oil recipes, key questions to ask when picking a product, and  the special considerations at the end of each chapter.  The special considerations consists of summaries of the chapter topics, as well as some do's and don'ts.  The staple product formula helps you to decided whether or not you can afford to incorporate pricey products into your routine.  You factor in the cost of the largest bottle you can afford, the number of ounces used each time, the number of times used per week, and the size of the largest bottle you can afford, in ounces.  I think it's a great concept, especially for product junkies that don't want to go broke.

In unit two, the focus shifted to hair care how-to's for the relaxed, naturals, and those that are transitioning.  She talks about old school methods used vs. the new school, more modern choices; step-by-step tutorials; protecting hair when swimming; and a routine to follow for no breakage.

Nicole makes some great points throughout the book, such as:
  • "Your product choices and styling techniques will determine if you love or hate your hair."
  • Looking at the first (top) five ingredients, which may be the most effective in the product.
  • "You will find the best products for your hair by reading the labels.  Not just the front of the bottle that uses hyped up words like "nourishing", "replenishing", and "restoring", but the back of  the  bottle where the ingredients are listed."
Photobucket
In reading this book, I thought of how it would be beneficial to me and my Kinkies.  The great thing about the book is that it touches on some do's and don'ts, questions to ask yourself when trying to pick the right products for your hair, and the tutorials.  However, I just wish that there was more of a focus on the all-natural and/or Ayurvedic ingredients and products, again, given that this is a book to aid us beauties in picking hair products.  While I understand that the book may not be catered specifically to us natural beauties, I think talking more about all-natural hair products and ingredients would have been great.  Natural hair is everywhere now (commercials, movies, regular TV shows... the workplace) and more products that are all-natural are being made.  So with that said, I think there could have been a bit more discussion about it.

The catch phrase for the book is "helping the product junkies of the world buy SMARTER, sort through marketing HYPE and save MONEY!"  Coincidentally, some of the products featured in the book, in my opinion, are full of hype and would cause you to [possibly] waste your money.  (Sorry, that's the 'I prefer natural and worthwhile products' part of me coming out.)

Is it a quick, easy read?  Yes.  It's only a few pages long, I read it in about two hours (with distractions).  Would I recommend it?  I can't fully say that I would, at least not at the price listed on the site ($14.99, I'm not sure if this includes shipping and if taxes are added on).  Would I use my copy again, as a reference?  Definitely yes.  Again, I did learn a few things and there were some helpful tips; however, I just wish that there was a well-rounded focus on other ingredients and products, those that don't contain sulfates, silicones, and other chemicals.  If you're in to some of the big name, somewhat popular companies, where their products aren't 100% natural, then this may be a great book for you.  Even if you're not, you may still get something out of the book, as I did.

If you do get a chance to read this book, come back and share your thoughts.  I would love to hear your perspective!

Jewelry Review - Elect Elegance

Hey Kinkies!  Guess what?!?  I'm reviewing some MORE jewelry!  I absolutely love accessories.  Especially with summer approaching us, we're going to be fly in our maxi dresses, twist outs, sandals and... ACCESSORIES!  You have to accessorize and coordinate and what better way to do it than with some HAUTE accessories?!?

the owner, Keysha Nicole, had sent me a few pieces from her webstore, Elect Elegance, to review and here's my thoughts...

What's Elect Elegance's earrings and necklace made of?
Bead, metal, and hotness!

What's your first impression of Elect Elegance's accessories Kinky?  Loving them!  Get me some earrings, and I am happy as ever!  Get me some earrings, and possibly coordinating pieces, in super dope colors, then I am ecstatic!
These totally cute earrings had magenta and turquoise beads, with different gems set in the center and pearl-like backgrounds... Think of how jade and mother of pearl look.  Now there's soooo many outfits that you can pair these earrings with and the bulky turquoise, geometrically shaped rings adds the right amount of sass  and flair.
As you can see, I absolutely loved this set!  It was love at first site upon opening my package!
So me being the lover of accessories, I thoroughly enjoyed rocking my pieces.  I can't wait to switch it up and rock them with different outfits.  Elect elegance has some totally cute pieces and so I am definitely looking to get more of her pieces.  I'm actually eyeing that turquoise butterfly bracelet, the ring to match, and the panda express bangle so don't be surprised if you see me rocking those in a video or other blog review!

So, I'm Natural... Do I HAVE To Use 'Natural' Products?

Survey says: It's your hair, it's your choice!

Now, don't get me wrong, I strongly encourage the use of products that are all-natural.  Why?  Because they not only aid in the health of your hair but it also affects the overall health of your body.  Remember, the products that you put on your hair, skin, and scalp ultimately end up in the blood stream.

So, is using natural products the way to go?  In my opinion, YES!  I suggest using products that are, for the most part, natural, limited in the amount of chemical additives and synthetic ingredients.  So Kinky, are you talking about all of the products found at beauty supply stores, online, and big stores like Target and Walmart?!?  No, I'm not talking about those 'natural' products full of synthetic ingredients.  I'm also not talking about those products that are targeted towards us naturals, yet don't have an ounce of a 'natural' ingredient in it (and if it does, it's not in the top five ingredients).  I'm not talking about the over-priced 'natural' products with ingredients that you can barely read, let alone pronounce.  I'm talking about the natural products that come from the earth.  The butters, the herbs, some oils...  Those are what I encourage others to use and what I strive to use for me and my daughter.

With that said, I know that there's some naturals, male and female alike, out there that still swear by the mineral oils, the sulfates, the parabens, the silicones, the TEAs, etc.  And your thoughts Kinky?  Do you (and your research) boo!  As long as you are aware and thoroughly informed of what you're using, how you're using it, and the potential effects, then all I can honestly say is, to each their own.  Certain gels, shampoos, conditioners, and stylers have the aforementioned types of [not so good] ingredients in them.  Are there alternatives to them?  Yes.  Should you try those natural alternatives?  Definitely!  Is it a guarantee that your hair will come out the same way if you start using all-natural ingredients?  Possibly (I refuse to make that guarantee and then y'all blame me saying, "Kinky told me X.Y. and Z...").  So, take a chance!

This is not a ploy to have certain companies shut down as they don't truly make all-natural products.  I'm also not here to publicly bash certain brands.  I just want to say: be warned Kinkies!!  Just because the label says it's natural, or organic, doesn't mean that it is!  Hell, feces are natural, would you go around using it in your hair?  (I truly hope that no one answered yes or even thought about it.).  Now, that may be an extreme example in some eyes, but you get the point right?!?  [insert nodding in agreement here.]  Good!

I know that I touched a bit on what some consider natural (or unnatural) in my blog post called You Ain't Natural.  However, today I just wanted to elaborate on the use of certain ingredients while living your 'natural' lifestyle.   I say do your research and make the decision ON YOUR OWN of what products you will use in/on YOUR hair.  If you're like others who ask me what to use, please understand that I would  suggest the all-natural alternatives for continued, long-term use.  However, please continue to use your discretion with what you use on your hair, your skin... Please also understand that what works for one, may not work for another.

I hope it helps!

Product Review - Whipfinity

Hey Kinkies.  I recently heard about a product called Whipfinity.  I was interested in trying out the product and was sent it out for review.

What's In Whipfinity?
Unrefined shea butter, argan oil, virgin coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, castor oil, vitamin E, rosewater, aloe vera, & essential oil

What's your first impression of Whipfinity Kinky?  I LOVE IT!!!  I had a choice of the scent and I picked Candy Cane.  My oh my did it smell JUST like that... You know how peppermint scented things smell like peppermint?  Well this smelled just like a candy cane!  I know a candy cane is made with peppermint oil and all, but this smelled more like a candy cane than a peppermint... Okay, moving on...

I applied Whipfinity to my freshly cleansed scalp and hair, while wet.  Every other day, I 'greased' my scalp with the Whipfinity.  My hair was amazingly soft and smelled soooo good!  My scalp was pleased about receiving the treat of Whipfinity.

Whipfinity isn't heavy on your hair at all, although shea butter based.  It emulsifies easily and smooths down the hair shaft without providing a heavy coating.   Whipfinity is very light and fluffy, as are most whipped products.
It's been almost a week and it's time to take these bad boys out!
I had some great definition and as I stated above, my hair was soft.  My cousin touched my hair and was surprised at the softness.  I must admit, I was too.  It was almost as if I was squeezing an extremely sponge...  I definitely prefer whipped, shea butter based products, rather than those that are not whipped.
Unfortunately, the pictures don't do my hair (or Whipfinity) too much justice as I was, in part, dealing with humidity (hence the bun).  In all honesty, not only would I recommend this product, I would actually purchase it myself.  The good thing, rather THINGS, about Whipfinity is that it's packed with a bunch of great ingredients and has multiple uses.  The website notes that in addition to using it when styling hair, you could also use it on the skin and as a prepoo.  While I did not try it as a prepoo or on my skin, given my love for this, I'm sure that it would work awesomely on the hair.  If you've tried it, let me know your thoughts.  If I have the opportunity to purchase it and try it for it's other uses, I will be sure to let you all know!

Product Review - Geseen Natural Beauty

Hey Kinkies.  Its time for ANOTHER product review.  Next up, the honey hair pomade from Geseen Natural Beauty.
What's Geseen Natural Beauty's Products?
Raw unrefined African shea butter, organic raw honey, rosemary oil, and our blend of essential oils.

What's your first impression of Geseen Natural Beauty Kinky?  For starters, the pomade is extremely thick.  If you're one who likes a thick pomade, this is for you!  How it looks on the site, is how it looks in person.

As for the smell, it smells of the first two ingredients, the shea butter and raw honey.  I know that some of you like to have a bit of scent added to your products, and I'm right along with you all.  In my opinion, I think that this pomade would benefit from sweeter smelling oils, or something to somewhat mask the smell of the shea butter and raw honey.  Other than that, I think the pomade was okay.  I like the pomade better for smoothing your edges than for twists.  The very last picture shows how the two twists in the front turned out after being in for a few days.  It goes without saying that I used the pomade on freshly cleansed, wet hair.  The first two pictures shows my wet hair, pomade applied.
Here I started to twist my hair...
I don't like the puffiness on my ends... as such, I did not expect my twist out to turn out as expected...
Coincidentally, I like the twist out.  Although it was wild, had some frizz, and lacked a lot of definition, I actually liked the BIG, crazy hair.  I even uploaded pictures on Twitter of my hair!
Here's a bit of a close up.  One good thing about this pomade, it did seem to lock in moisture as well as enhance the sheen of my hair.
And as I was playing around, trying to figure out what to do with the frizzy hair, I created this crown style.  I REALLY liked it.  Thanks to the pomade, I was able to lay down my edges.
Here's a close up of the back of the crown bun... I will again admit, the pomade aided in the softness and sheen of my hair.
And last but not least, The two front twists, unraveled.  I have some nice shine and definition!

While the smell is not the best, the results were not bad.  If looking to smooth your edges with this pomade, spritz a little water first and the results would be, in my opinion, better.  If I had more, I would have loved to see how it looks when I did a puff ponytail, while my hair was wet.  Just curious to see the waves and smoothness after application.

Jewelry Review - Dress Me Dainty

Hey Kinkies.  We all know SOME of my favorite things in the world... (accessories, sandals, flip flops, and t-shirts) and here's a review on one of them... EARRINGS!!  I was sent some totally cute earrings and a necklace for me and my daughter to review.  The items were provided to me by Dress Me Dainty.

What's Dress Me Dainty's earrings and necklace made of?
Fabric, metal, and cuteness?!?  <-- I made that up.  :-)

What's your first impression of Dress Me Dainty's accessories Kinky?  Love them!  While she set out and made tutu's for little girls, the owner/designer of Dress Me Dainty now also makes button earrings, bows, headbands and more!  I absolutely love my handmade set that was sent to me and my daughter adored the look of her Hello Kitty earrings.

The earrings sent are my first pair of button earrings.  Upon wearing them, I had no difficulty with them, even though they were a bit big (button earrings vary in sizes).  I had to get used to the size (nothing against Dress Me Dainty).  I love the set that she sent me as well as the denim/fishnet earrings.  I wore my set on Mother's Day and the other earrings on a random day.
My daughter wore her HK earrings to school; however, I think they were a bit too big for her as she said they were uncomfortable.  However, she did say that she may wear them again.
As for me, I would definitely wear them again!  Both sets sent me were different and fashionable.  I am totally looking forward to seeing what others styles she has in store.  Her Facebook page has lots of cute earrings and headbands already listed.
Would I recommend them from Dress Me Dainty?  Yep!  Button earrings are the new trend and I've seen quite a few styles that I would wear.  With summer approaching us, most of us will be wearing summer dresses and maxi skirts.  I think button earrings are a perfect way to ice the cake that is your outfit!  Please make sure you check Dress Me Dainty out and tell her that I sent you!

Product Review - Pami Pocket

Sometimes I absolutely hate carrying a purse.  (Men have it so easy!)  Sometimes I just want to up and go with a clutch... or now... my Pami Pocket.

What's Pami Pocket made of?
Neoprene and other fabric.

What's your first impression of the Pami Pocket Kinky?  I think it's totally cute and useful, especially for those who like to travel light.  I have a Samsung Galaxy S II and so my phone is HUGE!  Even with a two layer phone cover on it, it still fit into the Pami Pocket.  It's enough room to fit a phone, a few bucks, your credit card and your keys.  Maybe some lip gloss too!
You can wear the Pami Pocket as a cross-body or over your shoulder...
The Pami Pocket website claims that it's spill and splash-proof.  Of course I had to test it.  How did I test it you ask?  By taking a shower with it!  (insert giggling here)  I put paper in it, instead of my phone, to test it out.  Do you think it held up?
The Pami Pocket had gotten a little soaked when I held it directly under the water stream.  It wasn't soaking wet to the point where water just dripped from it.  It was wet to the point where I could squeeze a little bit of water out of the fabric.  It was okay with a few splashes; however, once drenched with water, the paper inside could not stand a chance.
As you can see, the paper had gotten wet after I showered with it.
For splashes and a little spill, it may hold up.  Would I recommend using it while on a water ride at an amusement park (or when you jump into a pool)?  Nope!  I didn't use it the entire time I showered, just long enough to see if the inside contents would get wet (about a minute).

Overall, the Pami Pocket is cool, me and my daughter liked it.  If you want to think of what to compare the fabric to, think of the water socks you wear to the pool and water parks.
